When I am a caged bird
My songs are not so sweet
A perfectly arranged score
Of lilting notes
A pure melody
But never a rhapsody.
I sing for you
My music, touching
Your beautiful soul
The sounds emanate
From my chained throat,
But my breaths
They carry not my heartbeats
Nor the wetness of my eyes
Or the bubbling joys that rise.
These things, they die
Inside my heart and my eye
Waiting to be born again
Some day,
When my breast will be unchained
My wings will be free
And I will sing my rhapsody
Just for you
And you will applaud
Just for me.
